Welcome to San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio, the 7th largest city in the United States, is well-known for the role "The Battle of the Alamo" played in the early history of Texas. Today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum located in the heart of downtown. It is clearly San Antonio's best-known landmark, and is featured in its flag and seal and in the city's nickname, "Alamo City".

San Antonio is a big city with a small town feel. Here you will find everything you'd expect in a large metropolitan area: performing arts, professional sports, shopping, public transportation, easy highway access, cultural and recreational attractions. San Antonio is also a walking city. Most of the interesting places are within ten blocks of each other, downtown, around the Alamo.

San Antonio Arts and Culture

Performing arts and cultural venues include the Lila Cockrell Theater (ballet, opera, theatre, concerts - 0.4 mi), Majestik Theatre (San Antonio Symphony - 0.8 mi), Charles McComb Empire Theatre (smaller productions, chamber orchestra, touring plays - 0.8 mi), and The Henry B. Gonzales San Antonio Convention Center (0.2 mi) - all less than one mile of The Fairmount Hotel. Many cultural events are held in San Antonio annually, including a variety of film festivals.

Nightlife and entertainment begins on The River Walk, Antonio's central entertainment district and home to several nightclubs, pubs, bars and restaurants. Among them are Hard Rock Cafe, Biga on the Banks, and Jim Cullum's Landing. Also in Downtown, the street scene includes several lounges, restaurants and bars.

San Antonio Museums, Missions, and History

San Antonio has two impressive art museums: The San Antonio Museum of Art (1.6 mi) is housed in the castle-like former headquarters of the Lone Star Brewery. This museum is noted for its antiquities collections, Mexican folk art, modern art, pre-Columbian art, Spanish colonial art, and the 30,000 square foot Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Arts. The McNay Art Museum (5.2 mi) is set in a Mediterranean-style mansion and has wide-ranging collections, including post-impressionist and modern art, theater art, Medieval art, Native American art and more.

You won't want to miss the chance to see the chain of missions established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century. Start your adventure at the Visitors Center at Mission San Jose (4.6 mi) and explore the other jewels of San Antonio's mission period.

Enjoy San Antonio Shopping

San Antonio shopping is an international favorite and is truly a shopper's paradise. Antique shops abound in the central city and in charming towns on the outskirts. Art galleries cover a wide spectrum of artistic achievements style from contemporary and western to Latin American folk art. No serious San Antonio shopper would miss La Villita (0.3 mi), Rivercenter Mall (0.7 mi), and Market Square(1.2 mi) in the historic heart of the city.

San Antonio Sports Venues

The city's top-level professional sports team is the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. Originally, the Spurs played at the Alamodome, which was built for football, but the Spurs built and moved into the SBC Center (3.8 mi) in 2002, since renamed the AT&T Center. The AT&T Center is also home to the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League and the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA. San Antonio is also home to the Double-A Minor League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, the San Antonio Missions who play at Nelson Wolff Stadium (9.6 mi). San Antonio also hosts the NCAA football Alamo Bowl each December in The Alamodome (1.2 mi).

San Antonio Outdoor Attractions: Theme Parks, Golf, Parks and Fun!

San Antonio is home to two major theme parks - Sea World San Antonio (17.7 mi), the world's largest marine life park, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas (15.9 mi), the town built just for fun, created around four themed areas. The Downtown All-Around Playground at HemisFair Park (0.2 mi) and the newly renovated Milam Park (across from Market Square) provide excellent stops for kids to burn off excess energy, and don't' forget the Tower of the Americas, which offers a spectacular view of San Antonio from 750 feet above the ground.
