Small Luxury Property Brings Overwhelming Elegance, Style to Downtown San Antonio
Boutique Hotel Feels Like Luxurious Home, Bursting With European-Inspired Finery In Every Detail
San Antonio, TX (January 2007) - Stepping into the new Fairmount Hotel is like stepping into a European palazzo right here in the Alamo City. The Fairmount is poised to become the finest hotel property in San Antonio, and worthy of the world renown it is generating now that its historic renovation is completed. Boasting 37 suites, each with hand-picked antiques and hand-made details, The Fairmount feels more like home than hotel, and a luxurious one at that.
"The Fairmount will be a living, breathing gallery of craftsmanship. All 37 suites and salon bedrooms will radiate with art, antiques and atmosphere." - Kristin Howlsey, President and Managing Director, The Fairmount
The Fairmount renovation has been designed with the help of a fleet of local artisans and artists. A warehouse full of antique furnishings was restored and reupholstered for the suites, some of which also boast hand-painted art on walls, tiles and fabrics.
Enter a Life-Sized Jewel Box
From the first steps inside, The Fairmount's lobby is an inviting parlor leading to a private courtyard. A dazzling display of colored granites, marbles and bronze, the courtyard appeals to the senses from the ground up. Fairmount owner Robert D. Tips calls the courtyard a "jewel box," laid with an intricate criss-cross pattern of polished and flamed granite. A pool and hot tub will be installed in the near future, with a unique fitted cover to easily convert the space into a wedding venue.
Every Suite or Salon is a New Experience
In every way, The Fairmount seems more like a home than a hotel, which is evident in the fact that each of the suites has been named. Each of the 37 suites has a distinct atmosphere, and every element of each suite's décor surrounds a different theme.
Some examples of suite names include the Rey Feo Suite, which reflects a San Antonio Fiesta theme, the Gold Suite, which is laced with expensive Italian tile affixed with 24-karat gold pieces, and the Romance Suite, which is a beautiful retreat for newlyweds or lovers looking to ignite a spark. A stay at The Fairmount is like a treasure hunt - each suite will be its own gem that guests can return to discover. From tailored upholsteries of rich European fabrics, to crystal chandeliers, to hand-carved furnishings and hand-painted tiles, The Fairmount is a treasure trove of art and design elements waiting to be discovered.
Sleep in a Monet Painting
Ever admired a beautiful painting so much you wished you could step inside it? A stay in The Fairmount's Monet Suite offers guests the chance to stay in a suite influenced by the master in every way. Washed, pastel colors evocative of Monet's work will serve as the canvas upon which this suite is painted.
The entrance will feature an onyx walkway set in pale gold and sea foam green onyx laid on a diagonal. Interspersed among the onyx will be small, iridescent glass mosaic tiles in Monet's palette of soft, pastel shades.
The foyer's walls will also echo European finery, featuring a row of mirrors articulated in gold-leaf frames in the style of Versailles' famous hall. The hallway is flanked with two columns of solid pink Italian marble that announce the entry into the main sleeping chamber, where miniature Monet-like paintings span the suite's thick gold-leaf wainscoting.
As the petite paintings run along the center of the wall, a number of framed atmospheric panels will be set above and below them. Each atmosphere will blend into the next and consist simply of layers of Monet-inspired colors, giving the suite an ephemeral quality.
The king-sized bed has an upholstered headboard made with gold silk hand painted with a scene of water lilies. A corona is set above the headboard, and from it cascades fine European fabric made to complement the fabric - a soft, pale moss-green silk with metallic light gold over-weave - that adorns the bedspread and curtains.
The Monet theme is carried into the bathroom as well, as the same pale gold and green onyx featured in the entry appears again. Just like the bedroom features petite Monet-like framed paintings along the wainscoting, the bathroom features hand-painted water lily tiles set into the wall.
The shower features three brass heads: an eight to ten inch diameter drench fixture overhead, a regular-height rain-style showerhead, and showerhead set lower to accommodate ladies who don't want to get their hair wet. The floor and ceiling consist of iridescent mosaic tile in glittery shades of French blue, costing some $40 per square foot, but its centerpiece is a four-foot tall hand-painted tile mural framed by light green crackle glaze border tile. Small chandeliers hang on either side of the bed in place of bedside table lamps.
"We're using the Rolls Royce of materials throughout this incredible property," says Tips.
Feel Like a King and Queen in the Gold Suite
Ever wish everything you touched turned to gold? You might get that feeling after a stay in The Fairmount's Gold Suite. Everything in the Gold Suite glistens with a soft, golden sheen, from floor to ceiling and in between.
The floor is made of gold-colored onyx accented with mosaic crinkled glass tiles. These Bisazza tiles, made in Italy with real 24-karat gold leaf, are encased in glass and cost about $600 per square foot. "We're using them strategically," Howsley explains. "They'll look like little pinpoints of gold sparklets."
Versailles-like paneling are featured along the suite's walls, framed with thick gold leaf moulding. Local artists used antique recipes to help age the mouldings and give them an antique luster.
One of the exquisite furnishings picked especially for this suite is a hand-painted French-style commode fitted with an onyx top and made into a vanity. Onyx also features prominently in the Gold Suite's bathroom, but what really makes an impression are the gold leaf accents. The glass shower door is etched with gold leafing, and the handcrafted tiles are finished with hand painted 24-karat gold highlights. "They use the same technique to make these tiles that is used to make fine gold china," Howsley says.
The king-size bed has an upholstered headboard wrapped in golden silk fabric, and also features a corona with draping fabric overhead. The fabrics are rich, golden sheens and represent a variety of textures including sheer and velvet. Other design elements in the Gold Suite include furnishings in the ornate style of Louis XIV.
These details are but a few of the awe-inspiring designs waiting to be discovered at The Fairmount, making any stay at this luxury boutique hotel will be like no other. As John Keats wrote, "A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever," and the timeless beauty of The Fairmount is sure to bring joy to all who stay there. The Fairmount's return is truly a most welcome home.
The Fairmount is a boutique luxury hotel made up of 37 salons and suites located steps from San Antonio's famed River Walk, across from HemisFair Plaza. Fairmount owner Robert D. Tips has invested in a meticulous renovation to restore the grandeur of this historic treasure built in 1906. Elegantly themed suites, a breathtakingly beautiful courtyard and hand-picked antiques accentuate an Old World European style, making every stay at The Fairmount a one-of-a-kind experience.
